UJCC holds public debate on the Electoral processes

With support from the British High Commission, UJCC held a public debate on the Electoral process on the 29th September 2009 at the Serena Conference Hall. The purpose of the public debate was to allow Ugandans from all walks of life and from diverse political backgrounds to discuss two important issues: the issue of democracy, and the issue of free and fair elections.

UJCC gets new Executive Secretary

With tenure of over 10 years, Rev. Canon Kaiso retired on 31st December 2008. His retirement at UJCC does not mean he has also retired from the work of God. Just like it is commonly said, “one door closes, another opens”; Rev. Canon Kaiso is currently in Nairobi and heads the Council for the Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA). UJCC is indebted to him for his commitment in making it what it is. On 10th January 2009 at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga, the UJCC fraternity bid farewell to Rev. Canon Kaiso and also witnessed a colorful inauguration of the new Executive Secretary Rev. Dr. Silvester Arinaitwe Rwomukubwe A.J. Rev. Dr. Arinaitwe has been the Deputy Executive Secretary of Finance and Administration at UJCC since 2003. He was appointed to his new office by the UJCC Executive Committee on January 1st 2009. Rev. Dr. Arinaitwe‘s appointment came at a time when UJCC was also blessed to have new staff added onto the family while some staff got promoted. Mr. Godfrey Amanyire, an appointee from the Church of Uganda is the new Deputy Executive Secretary Finance and Administration. Rev Kaiso hugs Fr. Arinaitwe after handing over the instruments of leadership at the inauguration Mrs. Elizabeth Zimba Kisiigha is the Deputy Executive Secretary in charge of Programmes since 2003 and was re-appointed by the Uganda Orthodox Church. Canon Joseph Oneka who has been a Programme Officer, Economic Justice was promoted to Head of Department, Democracy and Good Governance. Canon Joyce Nima who has been Head of Department Ecumenism, Interfaith and Consensus Building now Heads the Department of Peace Building and Conflict Resolution. Ms Maureen Namulawa Mboizi is the new Programme Officer Research, Advocacy and Communication. Ms Leticia Namboira Makooma is the new Assistant Programme Officer Parliamentary Liaison programme; and Ms Rachael Nyakecho is the new Programme Officer Governance. Rev. Peace Training Camp for Women and Community Leaders

In a bid to enhance the Culture of Peace among Ugandans; Uganda Joint Christian Council has established a Peace Village located in Mukono District at Kalagi in Nakanyonyi Sub County. It will hold programmes intended to promote peace building initiatives by providing the participants with skills and instill values of tolerance, peaceful co-existence, and appreciation of diversity, advocacy, economic empowerment and peaceful conflict resolution. The peace village is meant to be an experience of community living, working and sharing together.

Electoral Reform necessary for more Free and Fair Elections in Uganda

Through different consortia including: (CEJOCU) during the 1996 elections, Non Governmental Organizations Monitoring Group (NEMGROUP) during the 2001-2 elections and Democracy Monitoring Group (DEMGROUP) during the 2006 elections the Council has gathered and disseminated reports on the elections. Prominent among arising issues raised in the reports have been areas that need to be addressed in Uganda’s electoral process in order improve elections and referenda in Uganda. On 6th July 2007, UJCC presented a paper at a meeting convened by Parliament titled “Recommendations for Electoral Reform”.

UJCC 2007 PLENARY HELD

The Council held its Annual General  Meeting (Plenary) 2007              

                                                 

 

                                

 

The Council held its Annual General Meeting (Plenary) from 31st May to 1st June 2007 under the theme “Building a United Godly Nation through Family values and Christian Children Formation” (1 Cor. 7:1-16), at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel, Rubaga.

The Plenary brings together Bishops, women representatives, youth and EJACs from UJCC Member Churches to discuss key issues affecting the society under a selected theme and to forge a way forward on these issues to achieve UJCC Mission and Vision.    

It was attended by over 180 delegates including the top UJCC Leadership, Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga, the Chairperson of UJCC, Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi of the Church of Uganda and Bishop Mathias Ssekamanya of Lugazi Diocese represented the Archbishop of Kampala Archdioceses, His Grace Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

In attendance were over 25 Bishops from UJCC member churches in Uganda. The key note address was given by Mrs. Ruth Ssenyonyi, a marriage counselor on Family values and marriage and Dr. Sam Luboga from Makerere Univesity on Nurturing of children in Christian values. The Guest of Honour was the Inspector General of Government, Ms. Faith Mwondah. Other key speakers included URA Commissioner General Allen Kagina on Taxation in Uganda.
